Two Memory “T” Shirt Quilts

Two Memory “T” Shirt Quilts

ready for giving 1Memory quilt 1It’s fun to make memory quilts and Sue’s collection of shirts were special.  The first quilt uses favorite shirts of all types, including work shirts with pockets and buttons!4 shirt stylesI used an uneven four patch to get the small units together and the little Herky was cut out of another shirt and appliqued on.ready for giving 2Memory quilt 2The second memory quilt uses similar woven, rayon and knit favorites.  To add interest, I made a four patch out of the woven stripe shirts.  The three patch center unit allowed me to use the polo shirt motifs.  I love the wild rayon shirt prints!  As you can see, it doesn’t always have to be a “t”-shirt!

Are you ready to make a “Memory Quilt”?  If not, bring me your shirts and I’ll make it for you!

Thanks, Linda 🙂

Aria’s Hawkeye Rainbow Twister

Aria’s Hawkeye Rainbow Twister

Aria's Hawkeye Rainbow TwisterWe celebrated Aria’s first birthday last weekend and like Landon, I made a Lil’ Twister for her.  Iowa Hawkeye fabric is perfect for this family and I added a 2 1/2″ border after sewing the twisters together.  This is so fun to make, but I’ll need to get another pack of Kona charms squares to make more!lil twister and itty bitty twister before cuttingHere’s what the quilt looks like before the Lil’ Twister cutting.  The smaller one is the waste squares from Landon’s Lil’ Twister before cutting with the Itty Bitty template.Itty Bitty TwisterHere’s the Itty Bitty Twister sewn together.  The cutting mat grids are an inch and the twisters are about the size of a quarter!  It’s tiny!  This is still in the unfinished phase, I haven’t decided how to quilt and finish it!Me and Aria at her birthday partyAfter playing in the splash pad, we got Aria to cooperate and get a picture of us!  Isn’t she adorable?!  The back of the Lil’ Twister is Hawkeye fabric, too, perfect for a table topper during football season!

Here’s  photo progression of making Landon’s Lil’ Twister quilt, time for you to make one, too!!  If you click on the pictures, there’s a description of the process, too.

Have a safe and happy Labor Day weekend!

Island Chain, Quilt One, Quilt Two

Island Chain, Quilt One, Quilt Two

MM Island Chain restyled

I recently quilted two Island Chain quilts based on the pattern in Kim Brackett’s book, Scrap Basket Sensations.  Both quilters changed the pattern by adding additional rows of links and borders.  And by the way, both of the quilters are named Mary!

For Mary M.’s quilt we decided on an edge to edge design, free hand feather meander, using a neutral thread.  In this case, a light blue is neutral!

freehand feather meanderfreehand feather meander back detailFor Mary T.’s quilt, we decided on custom quilting with two thread colors, light in the light and dark in the dark.  Mary’s plan to use this as a raffle quilt for her church made me a little nervous!

Mary T Island Chain Raffle quiltThe quilt is queen sized and too large for my hanging space!  My goal was to compliment the graphic nature of the links by using a dark matching thread and using a different pattern in each link.

Border detail Island Chain backWhile the quilting doesn’t show up much on the front, it really shows on the back!  I used a thread two shades lighter for the bobbin in the dark areas.  The quilt back has a two tone effect.  I love it!  I didn’t realize Mary T. was entering this quilt in her local county fair until she called me to with the Best of Show result!!  How cool is that?

Quilting detailThe borders are quilted with freehand feather medley,  no stress or rules, just fill the space!

This month has been crazy and I’m way behind on posting but here’s a link to some pictures of Rosemary’s Peacock Takes a Trip quilt.

Thanks!!  Linda 🙂
