Design Wall Monday – Great Granny Squares!

Design Wall Monday – Great Granny Squares!

My friend, Candace, of The Double Nickel Quilt Challenge  got me started on something to use my precuts and scraps – Great Granny Squares!  She found the information on the Bee In My Bonnet blog.  Here’s the link to the post with the tutorial.

Candace and I got together to make a couple blocks.  Here’s her block below before trimming.

You may notice that we decided to do the method that Jolene has a tutorial here on Blue Elephant Stitches.  This method uses 2 1/2″ white squares all around and then you trim the block to within 1/4″ of the first round of focus blocks.  Our thinking was that if we’re going to sash the blocks anyway, this used less fabric with similar result.

Here’s a couple of my blocks trimmed and with some white sashing fabric on the design wall.

Here’s a before and after layout, too.

Now, after doing all that, I think I’m going to do the method that Lori explained in the Bee In My Bonnet post.  In her method, she uses larger background rectangles (white) for the outside.  The block can be trimmed to 12 1/2″.  When I trimmed my blocks to make them square, I had to get a little too close to a couple of intersections.

I did not sign up for the Great Granny Along but you can here!  I  plan to keep making blocks, because I’m looking at all the fabric I cut into 2 1/2″, 5″ and 10″ squares with a purpose now!

This is all you need to make the block!  A 2 1/2″ for the center and 1, 2 and 3 – 5″ squares!  Add your background fabric for the outside.

Celia’s Red/White Challenge – Christmas Star

Celia’s Red/White Challenge – Christmas Star

Celia designed an awesome quilt for her guild’s red and white challenge.  I was honored to partner with her to quilt it.

We decided to keep the red and white theme and stitch red thread on the red fabric and white thread on the white fabric.  The white fabric is Fairy Frost and Superior Threads Bottom Line Silver was the best thread for it!  It melted into the fabric, perfect!

She made the backing large enough to add 4 pillows, which I used to audition the designs!

Enjoy the pics!

The batting is Heirloom wool which really enhances the quilting, especially on the back.  I did use red thread in the bobbin for the red areas and it creates it’s own design.

The designing is done and it’s all sewn together!  And then I realized that I really like how it looks rotated.

I found some extra-wide white on white fabric in my stash so now all I need is to find some time to quilt it!

The July PSQ Charm Swap Begins

The July PSQ Charm Swap Begins

It’s charm swap time again!  Here’s the link to Mary at The Curious Quilter for all the info you need!

My pic shows 10 blocks complete but as of today I have 20 blocks finished.  Each block contains 64 – 2″ charms and is 12″ finished.  I’m planning to make a queen size quilt with no sashing and no borders so… I’ll need 56 blocks or 3,584 charms with no repeats!!  And that’s what’s so amazing about swapping!  For the last swap, I received 700 charms, none of them were the same!!!

If you’ve ever wanted to try a Postage Stamp Quilt, now is the time to start!  Check out Mary at The Curious Quilter for information, pictures and ideas!

This is my design for In The Bag ~ Ugly Fabric Quilt Challenge.

I’ve had it on the wall for most of the week and I still like it!  It reminds me of a picnic tablecloth.  I hope I can find the right fabric for the backing in my stash, too.

Thanks for all your earlier comments when I was deciding!  I appreciate them.

Have a happy and safe 4th of July to all of you Americans celebrating a day off in the middle of the week!

🙂 Linda
