Celia’s Mystery Quilt

Celia’s Mystery Quilt

Celia and Janann made Debbie Caffrey’s mystery quilt, Rain & Fire.  Janann added extra borders to her quilt and you can see that here, Blue and Yellow #3.  For Celia’s quilt, I ordered a dark purple OMNI thread by Superior to match the fabric and quilted feathers in the border.  The center is a freehand peacock feather design with OMNI natural white.  The batting is Quilter’s Dream Blend.  The matching thread creates  texture and movement without adding another color element and is perfect for this quilt.

The bobbin matches the dark purple which contrasts with the light backing fabric but that guarantees a perfect looking stitch from the front.  Because it matched so well on top, it was hard to see, so I’d stop and crawl under my longarm to look at it!

My one year anniversary for blogging is approaching!  I’m very thankful to my friend Candace of The Double Nickel Quilt Challenge for encouraging me to start blogging and my son, Drew, for helping with the website set up and maintenance.  He’s been very patient with me!  Having a photo diary of my quilting has been fun and helped me keep  a better record of each quilt, whether it’s mine or a customer’s.  I will be having my first giveaway on my blog over Thanksgiving weekend.  So check back for my Thanksgiving Giveaway post next week to see what you can win!

Thanks for looking and just keep stitching!

Personalized I Spy quilts

Personalized I Spy quilts

My friend, Candace, of The Double Nickel Quilt Challenge has made several of these personalized “I Spy” quilts for her grandchildren and others in her family.  Sometimes, if the quilts are going to the same household she’ll use the same “I Spy” squares but arranged differently so they can play their own matching game.  Isn’t that a great idea!  Check her blog for more ideas using 5 inch squares.

The quilting is a fun freehand design, I call Mod Flowers and Loops.  The name block has small loops as a background fill to flatten the area around the letters.  The batting is Quilter’s Dream Poly select and the thread is Superior So Fine #50.

Mountains Wall Hanging

Mountains Wall Hanging

Nancy has made a wonderful wall hanging!  She let me have full reign with this one!  Her main request was that the thread matched the fabric and I said, “I can do that!”  I knew there was a reason that I “collected” thread.  Here’s a big endorsement of Superior Threads’ So Fine #50, lots of colors and great for blending and thread play.  I used 11 different threads!

I just keep stacking them up on the ledge behind my longarm.  I usually match top and bobbin thread so the back of this quilt is just as interesting as the front!

As I quilted this, my focus was to add an organic detail and movement.  Some elements are not visible from the front without direct lighting and that’s okay, it’s adds lots of great texture.  I changed direction to contrast the neighboring element.

Nancy wanted a flat appearance so we used Quilter’s Dream 100% cotton select batting.  Even with fairly dense quilting, it lays flat.

I love the tree detail!

Purple Purple Quilt

Purple Purple Quilt

Isn’t this a great quilt for someone who loves purple? The quilting thread is purple, too! It’s quilted with a freehand quilting design I call Nouveau Feather meander.  This design is great for a beginning LA quilter and can be sized up or down to achieve the stitch density that you want.

The batting is Quilter’s Dream 100% cotton select.
