Shopping and birthday gift!

Shopping and birthday gift!

My big purchase (not counting Superior Threads) at the AQS show in Des Moines was 600 1″ hexagon papers for English paper piecing!  I’m going on a bus trip later this month and wanted to bring a hand sewing project.  I plan to cut a bunch of 2 1/2″ squares to start the process of making a small hexagon quilt or table runner.  When I got home from the show a birthday present was waiting for me from Wendy, one of my very good customers!  A 4″ Gingher scissors!  It’s a perfect take along scissor that is sharp enough to cut the corners of fabric and clip thread!  I tried it out this weekend when we traveled to Luther College for parents weekend, sewing the little samples that Paper Pieces hands out at the show.

Marilyn’s Batik quilt

Marilyn’s Batik quilt

After seeing this quilt by Marilyn, I developed my quilting design called “back and forth feathers” and quilted it on several other quilts, Marty’s, Drew and Abby’s, and Rainbows‘ first, before Marilyn brought hers to me for quilting.

Update:  The pattern for this quilt is “Do The Twist” by This & That.

The quilting uses the blocks as guidelines creating secondary designs.  It’s a feather design with a modern twist.  The blocks in Marilyn’s quilt are much larger that the other quilts but the designs still works.

The pieced back is awesome!  This quilt could be reversible!

How do you know if it’s a longarm quilter?  Because they are always showing their backs!

The batting is Quilter’s Dream Poly and the thread is Superior Threads So Fine #50.

Tomorrow’s my birthday and to celebrate I’m sending you a link for a free quilt pattern!  It’s a fun and fast quilt to make using 5″ squares from your stash of fabric.  Here’s your link to The Double Nickel Quilt Challenge free pattern.  Have fun and send me your quilt pictures!
