Design Wall Monday and retreat update

Design Wall Monday and retreat update

We had a great quilting retreat at A Place to Sew in DeSoto, WI.  What a wonderful place to sew, sew and sew!  Here’s one of the quilts that I started, Love’s Woven Rectangles.  I designed this on EQ7, based on other quilts of this style, when I decided to re-purpose this fabric.  I cut the long borders today because I didn’t want to piece this fabric for the wide borders.

I posted pictures throughout the weekend on my Facebook page and got a request for the measurements.  So here’s the details for making your own Woven Rectangles.

Cut print fabric into 5 1/2″ strips

Cut solid fabric into 2″ strips

Sew solid strips to each side of print fabric using scant 1/4″ seam.  An accurate seam is important to achieve a finished 8 1/2″ strip set.  (Ask me how I know that!)

A short strip is pictured here because I cut the long borders from this fabric.  For all the other fabrics, I cut width of fabric to make the strip sets.

Cut the strip sets into 8 1/2″ segments.  The blocks are a 8 1/2″ square.

Repeat this step for every print fabric.

Alternate the blocks to create a woven look.  I’m making 80 blocks for an 8 x 10 setting.  My design wall picture is a random setting but I’ll probably play around with other looks.

Cut additional 2″ solid fabric strips to make the narrow inner border.

Cut 5 1/2″ strips, either lengthwise or crosswise (for pieced) from the border fabric.

Here’s my link for adding borders to your quilt top.

Thanks for looking and have fun planning your own Woven Rectangles!  Check out Judy at Patchwork Times for other Design Wall Monday projects.

Just keep stitchin’ !
