How to Interpret the Color Wheel

How to Interpret the Color Wheel

Here’s an article about the color wheel I originally received from Modern Quilts Unlimited E-News.  I’m glad I saved it because the information isn’t on their website anymore.   Click the title to download a pdf for future reference.  HOW TO INTERPRET THE COLOR WHEEL

Color has three qualities – hue, value, and intensity.  Hue is the color name (Red, Green, Yellow).  Tint is a hue plus white. Shade is a hue plus black.  Tone is a hue plus gray.  Value is the lightness or darkness of a hue.  Intensity is how deep, or bright, a color is.  Red, Yellow, Orange and combinations are ‘warm’ colors.  Green, Blue, Violet and combinations are ‘cool’ colors.  Red, Yellow and Blue are Primary Colors – and are the basis for all other colors all other colors.  Secondary Colors are direct mixes of Primary Colors. · Green — made from equal parts of blue and yellow.  · Orange — made from equal parts of yellow and red.  · Violet — made from equal parts of blue and red.  Tertiary Colors are a mix of Primary and a Secondary Colors.  Analogous Colors are side-by-side on the Color Wheel.  Complimentary Colors are opposite each other on the Color Wheel.  Split-Complimentary Color Themes utilizes three side-by-side colors with an addition of a color on the opposite side of the wheel.

This quilt uses the color wheel!

Kinsey’s I-Spy

Kinsey’s I-Spy

Kinsey's I-SpyHere’s another fun I-Spy quilt by Candace of Double Nickel Quilts and Moore About Nancy – Nancy Cabot SewAlong.  What’s cool about this quilt is it has the same I-Spy squares as one of Kinsey’s siblings so they can play an I-Spy or a matching game together.

Name detailLittle loops and outlining define the name.

What’s your favorite I-Spy pattern?  The only I-Spy I’ve made was for my granddaughter for Christmas in 2005!  I can’t believe it was that long ago and that I could find a picture to share!

Bittersweet Crossings – 30’s Sampler

Bittersweet Crossing

Another big one!  For a fairly new quilter, Kate’s tackled a big project with this block of the month quilt.  I love the 30’s fabrics! The batting is Quilter’s Dream Wool which is great for creating definition and texture.  It was a dream to quilt, too. Here’s a few detail pics for you! Retreat Recap and Design Wall Monday

Retreat Recap and Design Wall Monday

Dancing Nines                                         Retreats are fun!  I worked on several projects including my current Postage Stamp quilt called “Dancing Nines”.  I’m almost to the half way point, 22 more blocks to go!  One block is the 4 nine patches with the off-set sashing strips, measuring 11 inches finished.  Check out Quiltville if you want to make your own. I also finished 3 scrappy coiled bowls! scrappy batik coiled bowls  scrappy coiled bowls 14The first two were random scrappy batiks and the last was controlled scrappy.   Jane’s Convergent Quilt is gone!  Jane was at our retreat and I gifted her one of the bowls using the fabric from her quilt lesson.  She couldn’t believe that I cut it up!  Now, I’m looking at my batiks remnants with purpose!  Of course, any fabric would work, but the batiks wrap easily and fray less. When I get caught up on longarm quilting, I will be sewing more coiled bowls! Check out Judy at Patchwork Times for other Design Wall Monday projects! Thanks!  Linda 🙂

Are You Ready To RETREAT!

Are You Ready To RETREAT!

stuff for retreat Quilting retreat that is!  Starting tonight is Rainbows and Calico Things annual Winter retreat.  I have been going to this retreat since 2002, only missing a couple years when our youngest had show choir competitions. If time allows, I’ll be posting antics and pictures on my Facebook page! Hope you’re quilting this weekend, too! 🙂 Linda
