Another Vintage find

Another Vintage find

On a recent shopping adventure, my quilting buddy, Candace  and I found this twin size quilt top.  It’s in great condition, totally hand pieced and sweet!  I might have to find someone to date the fabric in this quilt.  Some of it feels and looks like feed sack fabric.  The framed 9-patch block with the solid block is a great layout, and even though it’s “vintage” it has a very modern feel.

Aren’t these fabrics great!?  Now that I’ve collected several vintage quilt tops, I need to schedule some time to finish them.  This will be a fun quilt to play with the big white areas!

UPS just brought me a 65 pound bundle of joy!  Stay tuned for the full reveal next week!!!

Have a great weekend!  🙂 Linda

Design Wall Monday – All Vintage

Design Wall Monday – All Vintage

My Great Granny Square blocks are done!  So they are off to the side waiting to be sewn into a flimsy.

Here’s one of my flea market finds.  While it’s not a traditional vintage quilt, it’s a great example of a frugal quilter using everything in her arsenal to make a quilt.

In fact, it’s not too far off one of the quilts I photographed at the AQS quilt show in Des Moines last week.

The quilter used orphan blocks and scraps to design this quilt.  I love both of them!

Here’s the rest of my vintage fabric pile!

And my favorite purchase is an orange Federal mug!!  If it’s orange I love it!

And apparently, I loved it when I was 12!  Guess who’s got the orange purse and shoes!

Thanks for looking!  Check out Judy at Patchwork Times for other Design Wall Monday projects.

Vintage Quilt part 2

Vintage Quilt part 2

Here’s the full reveal of the vintage quilt from this post. Most of the nine patch blocks were hand pieced by Sandy’s friend who is 93.  She started the blocks years ago (during her 40’s!) and Sandy is helping her finish it.  Does it remind you of today’s improv and modern quilts?

Here’s the coordinating bed runner.  The little pinwheel blocks are not pieced but fussy cut from the fabric.  They fooled me the first time I looked at them.  What’s really great about finishing this quilt is that she plans to use it!  She’ll finally get to sleep under it.  Once again, I was honored to be part of getting this project done.

Do you have an vintage unfinished quilt in your closet?  What’s the story behind it?

Thanks for looking!  🙂 Linda

Vintage Fun

Vintage Fun

I just finished quilting another vintage quilt, that’s 2 in one month!  Many of the fabrics look like my recent flea market purchases.

Here’s some photos comparing my flea market fabric to the quilt fabric.  What do you think?

The fabric is very similar in texture and style.  Mine are in the center, cut up and ready to use!

Some of the flea market fabric I set aside as not usable, but 2 of the fabrics in this quilt are almost identical to my purchases.

The tiny Christmas prints could be coordinates.

I totally dismissed the green fabric but it is exactly like the red fabric in this block.  It’s very loose and linen like.  Not sure if I’ll use it but you never know!

I’ll post pictures of the whole quilt after it’s delivered!

Thanks for looking!

Patti’s Vintage Quilt

Patti’s Vintage Quilt

The vintage quilt is quilted!  Patti’s grandmother and great-aunt made this quilt many years ago and I was very excited to quilt it for Patti.  The 42 blocks are hand pieced and my untrained eye would date the fabric from feed sack era to 70’s.  We decided to quilt a very small meander throughout the quilt.  This allowed me to stitch thru some areas where the seams had loosened and stabilize everything.  I’m hoping Patti will show me the quilt finished, after it’s been washed and dried.

At first glance, I thought all the blocks were the same and then rotated to look different.  But Michele of Quilting Gallery pointed out that there are two different blocks.  Her Jinny Beyer’s book identified them as Whirligig and Patch Me If You Can.  And another blog commenter listed many different names on a previous post.  Pretty interesting!

Patti brought her baby quilt to show me!  Her grandmother made it for her 70 years ago.  The hand quilting was fabulous and the edge was prairie points.  It was a lavender and cream quilt and she used lavender thread for the quilting!  I wish I would have taken a picture, it was awesome!

Thanks for looking!  🙂 Linda
