Design Wall Monday – What a Pile of Scraps!

Design Wall Monday – What a Pile of Scraps!

scraps from haley

Okay, it’s a design pile of future quilts!

I love that my 10 year old granddaughter, Haley, knows me so well that she’d give me a big bag of scraps she got at a garage sale.  And I love that when Haley  told the seller she was buying them for her grandma, she gave them to her for free!  What a great birthday present!

After all the company was gone, I enjoyed my quiet time sorting and ironing the scraps!  Here’s my sorting process.  sorted scraps

1.  Pieced remnants for Mile a Minute project

2.  1 1/2″ strips for Trash to Treasure Pineapple quilt

3.  Small strips and pieces to be cut into 2″ and 2 1/2″ charm squares for PSQ quilts and swaps

4.  Large pieces sorted by light, mediums and blacks

5.  Bright strips for string pieced Tummy Time quits

6.  Batik strips and pieces

Because I’m a scrap quilter, these fabrics will be used!   Most of the fabric is quilt shop quality fabric, too!  Haley did a great job!

This week is a Houston warm up!  It starts with a small group quilting retreat in Des Moines and the AQS quilt show.  Stay tuned for updates!

Thanks!  Linda 🙂

Design Wall Monday – Jane’s Convergent Quilt

Design Wall Monday – Jane’s Convergent Quilt

problem

Houston, we have a problem!

A couple of weeks ago, my quilting friend, Jane, showed me how she made her Convergent quilt.  I got a good start and then had to put it way, not good.

fixed

Okay, Houston, let’s fix it!  I spent a couple hours trying to put the pieces back in order for sewing!

Here is Jane’s quilt.  Now that I know what I’m doing (sorta), I’ll pick brighter colors for the next one!

The Goodbye Quilt by Susan Wiggs and Rachel’s Confetti Toss

Do you like to read and quilt?  If so, check out Starwood Quilter, an online quilter’s book club.  For the month of September we are reading, The Goodbye Quilt by Susan Wiggs.  There’s still time to get in on the fun!

Many years ago, before I started “quilting”, I made a string quilt using the scraps from the clothes I was making for our daughter.  The quilt is tied with polyester high loft batting and the backing is rolled to the front finishing the edges.   Confetti Toss is the antique quilt it’s patterned after, published in Quilts Sew Quick by Oxmoor House in 1995.  I’m still making string quilts, however they have evolved!

Do you want to make this quilt?  Check out The Goodbye Quilt by Susan Wiggs, the pattern is at the end of the book!!

Dolly Quilts for little ones

Dolly Quilts for little ones

wrapped and ready

What does a quilter take to a 2 year old’s birthday party for a present?  Dolly quilts!

Anabel's dolly quilt

As a true scrap quilter, I went to my box of “magic squares” and found sample cuts of a fabric line and random squares of miscellaneous scraps donated to me.

This group is perfect for Anabel’s dolly quilt, the birthday girl.

Jordy's dolly quilt

The random squares are great for Jordy, not his birthday but it’s fun to have a gift for him, too.

flannel back on Anabel's

The quilts are pillow-cased with no batting.  I used flannel and Minkee for the backing fabric.  My expert grandma friend, Candace, recommends no batting for dolly quilts, it’s better for wrapping the babies!

I couldn’t get the birthday girl, Anabel, to pose but here’s Jordy and his baby taking a nap.

Thanks!  🙂 Linda

Dish Mats Revisited Again and Again!

Dish Mats Revisited Again and Again!

stack 3 trimmed fat quarters and cut

Fabric Selection!  Yes, choosing fabrics for projects can take time and stall your progress!  In the process of selecting fabrics for demonstrating my dish drying mats, I was stuck.   I needed 2 coordinating fabrics but I had 3 that worked perfectly together.  No problem!  Make the dish mats with three fabrics!

Here’s a mini tutorial for making my dish mats with three fabrics.

1.  Stack 3 trimmed fat quarters and cut as shown.  I cut my borders at 4″ but you can use any measurement you want.

shuffle elements to make 3 dish mats

2.  Shuffle the elements to make 3 dish mats.

3.  Sew, assemble and quilt according to Linda’s Dish Mat Tutorial Revisited.

And you’re done!  Ready to gift, which is what I did with these!

3 dish mats done!

This technique would be great for place mats or even mug rugs! mug rug with dish mat technique

Here’s a mug rug I made using my dish mat revisited technique.

What have you made using this technique?

Thanks!  🙂 Linda
