Connie’s Twister Quilt

Connie’s Twister Quilt

Don’t you love the modern colors for this twister quilt?  And Connie used the leftover squares to make the small twister border!  That’s a nice feature of using the twister tool.  Connie wanted minimal quilting that featured the twister pattern,  She also selected a darker plain backing fabric so the quilting would show on the back. I designed a tessellating pattern running through the large twisters and a smaller version for the borders.  The cream background is a small loop meander.

I love the secondary pattern this is created and evident from the back.  This will make a fun reversible quilt!

The batting is Quilter’s Dream Wool which is great for accentuating quilting!

The top thread is Superior OMNI, light tan and the bobbin thread is Superior So Fine #50 Teepee.  By using darker thread in bobbin the thread color was subtle against the orange fabric.  The lighter top thread was perfect for the background and twister fabric without having to change thread colors.

Still have a couple of quilts to post before I finish for the year and then on to 2012!

Thanks for looking!

Celia’s Mystery Quilt

Celia’s Mystery Quilt

Celia and Janann made Debbie Caffrey’s mystery quilt, Rain & Fire.  Janann added extra borders to her quilt and you can see that here, Blue and Yellow #3.  For Celia’s quilt, I ordered a dark purple OMNI thread by Superior to match the fabric and quilted feathers in the border.  The center is a freehand peacock feather design with OMNI natural white.  The batting is Quilter’s Dream Blend.  The matching thread creates  texture and movement without adding another color element and is perfect for this quilt.

The bobbin matches the dark purple which contrasts with the light backing fabric but that guarantees a perfect looking stitch from the front.  Because it matched so well on top, it was hard to see, so I’d stop and crawl under my longarm to look at it!

My one year anniversary for blogging is approaching!  I’m very thankful to my friend Candace of The Double Nickel Quilt Challenge for encouraging me to start blogging and my son, Drew, for helping with the website set up and maintenance.  He’s been very patient with me!  Having a photo diary of my quilting has been fun and helped me keep  a better record of each quilt, whether it’s mine or a customer’s.  I will be having my first giveaway on my blog over Thanksgiving weekend.  So check back for my Thanksgiving Giveaway post next week to see what you can win!

Thanks for looking and just keep stitching!

Blue and Yellow #3

Blue and Yellow #3

Here’s Janann’s third blue, yellow and white quilt, a mystery quilt.  Her friend Celia did the same quilt and I’m in the process of quilting that right now.  Celia’s quilt stops at the yellow, Janann added the two borders to make the quilt a queen size.  As you can see, it’s bigger than my hanging space!

For the scrappy blues we decided on a bead border and a small meander in the darker blue.  For the inside borders I drafted a swirly nouveau feather design to fill the wide white to yellow area.

Just click on the pictures for a larger view.

The center of the quilt is a tear drop echo meander.

The batting is Quilter’s Dream Poly select and the thread is Superior OMNI.

Double 4 Patch

I love how Candy of Double Nickel Quilt Challenge keeps creating quilts that are fun to quilt!  She’s challenged me to use different approaches that compliment the quilt without being heavily quilted.  While a pantograph would have been okay for this quilt, I really felt that would take away from the secondary pattern of the block set.  I decided to do a type of Terry Twist continuous curve with an added line through the middle in each block and small 4 patch block.

As you can see it creates it’s own secondary patterns which give texture and movement.  I wanted to keep the pattern going into the border so I just imagined that the border was a block and continued the pattern.  Let me know what you think!

Corner, Middle, Corner, Middle

Corner, Middle, Corner, Middle

Here’s a quilt by Candy showing the breakdown of the quilting pattern, corner, middle, corner, middle (c, m, c, m).  The first time I used this design on one of Candy’s quilts a few years ago, I loved it and wanted to do it again!  In fact, I made 2 of my Bucket List quilts just so I could quilt this design again!   When she brought me this quilt, we both knew it would be a good design for all these triangles!

The One block photo shows the stitching sequence – c, m, c, m – until you are back where you started.  And yes, you must say those words as you stitch, “corner, middle, corner, middle”!  The block is about 8″ and I use a ruler, stopping at each corner to reposition the ruler with the needle down.

The Four block photo shows the secondary pattern starting to emerge.  This is where I start the stitching, in the center of four blocks.  I can stitch out four blocks before having to break my thread.

The Partial and Whole quilt photos show the secondary pattern that is created with the “stars”.  Isn’t that awesome?!  This design works well in cornerstones and blocks when they are separated by sashings but I love it when they are all together creating another design.
