Design Wall Monday – All Vintage

Design Wall Monday – All Vintage

My Great Granny Square blocks are done!  So they are off to the side waiting to be sewn into a flimsy.

Here’s one of my flea market finds.  While it’s not a traditional vintage quilt, it’s a great example of a frugal quilter using everything in her arsenal to make a quilt.

In fact, it’s not too far off one of the quilts I photographed at the AQS quilt show in Des Moines last week.

The quilter used orphan blocks and scraps to design this quilt.  I love both of them!

Here’s the rest of my vintage fabric pile!

And my favorite purchase is an orange Federal mug!!  If it’s orange I love it!

And apparently, I loved it when I was 12!  Guess who’s got the orange purse and shoes!

AQS Des Moines!

AQS Des Moines!

We had a great time at the AQS quilt show in Des Moines yesterday!  Lots of great quilts and lots of vendors!!  Check out the link for a slide show of the winners.  Here’s a quilt that doesn’t look like a quilt when it’s photographed!  It’s “Quilter’s DNA” by Roger Winchell of Asheville, NC.  Pretty awesome!!

Besides thread, my purchases were gadgets!  Normally, I’m all about fabric but everything I wanted was sold out!  So, I have 3 new tools to try out – Seam-Fix seam ripper, Spiral Eye Needles, and Pilot Frixion erasable pen.  I’m anxious to use them and will report back with a product review!  If you have already used these products, leave me a comment with your review!

Nineteen Great Granny Squares done!!!  One to go!  I’m excited to finish this quilt and add it to the “ready to quilt” pile!  I’ll have to find another project to make with my 5″ and 2.5″ squares, my pile didn’t get any smaller!  How is that?

Red and White Giant Dahlia

Red and White Giant Dahlia

Isn’t this wall hanging awesome?!  Janann designed a fabulous red and white quilt, and I was honored to quilt it for her.

To keep with the quilt’s red and white theme, red So Fine 50 thread was used for the red fabric and white Bottom Line thread was used in the white fabric.

I used a new product, Grid Marker from June Tailor, to mark a diagonal grid behind the dahlia for the CC quilting in the background.  After quilting, the washable marker was removed.

The back view shows the quilting detail and the red bobbin thread looks good, too!  The outside checkerboard is CC using a ruler and the background orange peel CC is freehand.  The flower detail and narrow border is quilting “freestyle”, too!

New Favorite Thread!

New Favorite Thread!

I love thread!  Have you purchased quilting thread just hoping you’ll get to use it?  That’s what I did with my recent purchase of Superior Threads Bright Light Green.   It’s much brighter and more florescent in person!  It didn’t happen immediately but I finally got to use it, three times in a row!

The first quilt was Kinsey’s quilt.  My first instinct was to use aqua but that looked dull, the bright green was perfect!  I only wish I had bought 2 spools so I didn’t have to unthread to wind a bunch of bobbins!

The pantograph is Daisy Swirl by Jodi Beamish.

The second is an original Friendship Star quilt by Karen.  Again, the lime color just popped out and we went for the bright color to accent fabric.

The third one is Candy’s Lil’ Twister quilt from our summer retreat.  The brightest fabric is the lime green and the thread tied it all together!

Needless to say, I’ll be getting another spool of this thread for bobbin winding!  Fortunately, there’s an AQS quilt show in Des Moines next week with lots of vendors, including Superior Threads…I hope!

Thanks for looking!  🙂 Linda
